Just because the sign says cheap sewing machines, doe not mean it is affordable. The word here is affordable. And his has a lot of different meanings. On one level, the word affordable has to do with whether you have enough money to purchase the sewing machine. On another level, it would have to do with whether you can afford to have the machine break down. These are things you have to consider when looking for a cheap sewing machine.

A friend of mine is a full time seamstress. She has a lot of business come her way by word of mouth and she also does a little advertising here and there. But mainly in smaller, local newspapers. The last time she was looking for an affordable sewing machine, she had quite a bit more to think about. Her turnaround time is fairly quick. And if her sole sewing machine broke down, her clients would be waiting for a long time. She cannot afford this. So, when she looks for an affordable sewing machine, she looks for several things.

She looks for a well known brand. Now, granted there are really only a handful to consider here. There are not too many small time people, building sewing machines or selling boutique, hand built sewing machines. So this narrows her search quite a bit. A lot of times, she looks in fabric stores for an affordable sewing machine. But too many times, the local dealer is really not able to adjust the price all that much. It’s not like haggling at the car dealership anymore.She usually ends up looking for a cheap sewing machine online or scours the local newspapers or even magazines.

She also considers things like the age of the machine, how much it has been used (if it’s a used sewing machine). Used sewing machines are great because usually they are cheaper and if it is going to have major problems with it, they are discovered by the 1st owner before it gets to you. I hate to say it, but older sewing machines are probably going to be built a little better than newer ones. This has just been my experience.Sometimes you can find cheap singer sewing machines or sometimes even cheap brother sewing machines. Although the Brother sewing machines may be a bit newer.

There are tons of things to consider when looking for a cheap sewing machine. An affordable sewing machine is one that doesn’t hurt your pocketbook, but also doesn’t break down and serves it’s purpose. You should look for a little older brands and take the initiative to find sewing machines online as well.
